Scopolamine Transdermal Topical Gel
Uses: Scopolamine Transdermal Topical Gel is used to alleviate nausea and vomiting associated with motion sickness and dry up excessive secretions. It also can be used for other conditions as prescribed by your doctor.
Scopolamine 0.25mg/0.1ml in a base of Pluronic/Lecithin Organogel (PLO)
Directions: Clean and dry the area with a warm washcloth prior to administration, as this will increase blood flow and aid in absorption, as well as remove any skin oil. The usual dose is 0.1ml-0.2ml applied every eight hours topically behind the ear or to the wrist area on the inside of the forearm. Be sure to rotate sites to avoid possible skin irritation. The cream should be rubbed thoroughly into the skin and then can be covered with an occlusive dressing such as Tegaderm or Op-site. Make sure you thoroughly wash your hands after administration as it can cause dilation of the pupils if it gets in the eyes. This dosing method allows the patient to adjust the dose to achieve the desired effect. If the desired amount of nausea control is not achieved, more of the gel can be applied with the next dose. Store away from light and extreme hot or cold (refrigeration).
Side Effects: If dry mouth, drowsiness, or blurred vision becomes a problem with the current dose, less gel can be applied or the dosing interval can be extended. The freedom to change the dose is a valuable quality of this dosage form. One advantage to transdermal administration is a reduction in drowsiness. If local irritation to the site of administration occurs, discontinue use and notify your physician. A feeling of warmth or coolness is considered normal and is not considered an allergic reaction.
Precautions: Persons whom are sensitive to egg whites should not use this product as it contains lecithin. Those who are sensitive to scopolamine should not use this product. Do not drive or operate machinery while using this medication. Do not drink alcohol while using this medication. Any skin irritation or difficulty urinating should be reported to your physician.
Dispensed in 1ml syringes for easy measuring and application.
** In addition to our scopolamine gel, we have several other formulas we can use to compound depending on the type of nausea. Other popular recipes include 1.) HABR (Haldol, Ativan, Benadryl, Reglan) capsules, suppositories, or transdermal gel for chemotherapy-induced nausea, 2.) Promethazine transdermal gel for use in children or adults who can not take anything orally and do not want the discomfort of using rectal suppositories, and 3.) First Trimester Anti-Nauseant (Dicyclomine, Doxylamine, and Pyridoxine) capsules for women who suffer from morning sickness.
Available from the Compounding Pharmacists at Webb’s Family Pharmacy. If you have any additional questions about this or any other special compounding need, please call (574) 223-2216 or (574) 893-4413 and ask for Harry, Adam, or Mary.

Compounding Tidbit What is a PLO Gel Many of our topical products are compounded in a pluronic lecithin organogel base referred to as PLO gel. PLO is an emulsion that has the appearance and feel of a gel. It consists of both an aqueous and a lipid (fat soluble) phase, which causes the formation of micelles. The PLO base allows a drug to penetrate the skin without damaging it, so that the active drugs can easily enter into the systemic circulation. One unique characteristic of this base is that it is thermo reversible. It should be stored at room temperature to keep the emulsion solid; if refrigerated it quickly turns to liquid.
