Life is a Parade!

In celebrating our 15th anniversary, we had an entry in the Round Barn Festival Parade on June 10th and in the Akron 4th of July Parade.  In keeping with the tradition of the 1st RBF we passed out 5000 wooden nickels. And in Akron we passed out pillboxes and candy.  Fun was had by all...

Poison Ivy, Oak, & Sumac:

The Itching Facts & Common Myths About Contact Dermatitis
Brought to you by the compounding pharmacists at Webb’s Family Pharmacy

Poison ivy, oak, and sumac belong to a family of plants that produce one of the most common allergic reactions in the United States.  It is estimated that up to 70% of the population is allergic to uroshiol, which is the oil found in the sap of these plants.  The reaction, otherwise known as allergic contact dermatitis, occurs when uroshiol attaches itself to the skin after direct (leaves, stems, and vines) or indirect (contaminated objects such as clothing, pets, or garden tools) contact with the oil.

Skin rash – A red, itchy rash usually appears within 12 to 48 hours after exposure and lasts 10 days to 4 weeks.  Swelling, blistering, and oozing may also occur.  A secondary infection may occur and delay healing if excessive scratching of the blisters occurs.

Decontaminate: Remove all exposed clothing and place in a disposable bag or container prior to entering the home to avoid transfer of uroshiol oil onto carpets, furniture, linens, and other household items.  Wash all exposed clothing in a washing machine with a mild detergent.

Cleanse: All exposed areas should be washed with cold, running water as soon as possible, preferably within the first five minutes.  Patients should also shower with regular bath soap within 30 minutes of exposure.

Relieve: There are several over the counter products available to treat the symptoms associated with mild to moderate poison ivy.  Calamine lotion, pramoxine, and hydrocortisone may alleviate the itch.  Lukewarm baths containing an oatmeal or baking soda can also help to ease skin discomfort.  TecnuÔ and ZanfelÔ are skin cleansers that have clinically shown to remove uroshiol after breakout and relieve itching within seconds after use.  Products containing menthol and camphor help with itching as well as to soothe and dry the affected area (s).  There are also many products containing diphenhydramine and benzocaine, but there is doubt of their effectiveness.  Have your Webb’s Family pharmacist recommend a product that best fits your needs.  If the rash is severe, contact your physician for treatment, as it will most likely require prescription steroids to treat.

Prevention: Learn to identify and avoid contact with poison ivy, oak, & sumac.  Destroy all poison ivy, oak, or sumac growing around the house.  Use chemicals to do this, as burning can cause a severe reaction secondary to inhalation of the oil.  Wear long pants, socks, and long-sleeved shirts when walking in fields or wooded areas.  Apply Ivy-BlockÔ, which acts as a barrier to the oil before going into potentially infested areas.

Myths                                                                       Facts

Nearly all parts of the plant contain uroshiol, including stems, roots, flowers, berries, and leaves.

Wearing long sleeves, gloves, and pants will always prevent a reaction to poison ivy.

These articles aid in preventing a reaction, but the oil can still seep through.

Burning is a safe way to dispose of infested areas.

While smoke is harmless, uroshiol particles are dispersed in the smoke.

Dead plants are no longer toxic.

Uroshiol remains active for at least 5 years in the dead plant.

Blister fluid can spread poison ivy from one part of the body to another and from one person to another (contagious).

The blister fluid does not contain uroshiol and cannot cause a reaction.

The rash spreads from one part of the body to another.

The rash can only spread if contact with the oil is made.  The rash may appear to spread, but this is due to thickness of the skin in various areas (some areas may take longer to react than others after exposure).

You can get a rash from being near the plants.

Direct contact with the oil is necessary to cause a reaction.

Once allergic, always allergic.

A person’s sensitivity changes over time, even season to season.  Sensitivity usually declines with age.

Over-the-Counter Cost Savings Tip

Do you suffer from frequent heartburn two or more days per week?  Are you having a hard time justifying the expense of those prescription acid reducers?  PrilosecÔ, one of the world’s top-selling prescription drugs in its class is now available over-the-counter.  One tablet lasts for up to 24 hours, avoiding the need for multiple daily doses.  Prilosec OTCÔ is a proton pump inhibitor that shuts down active pumps that make the acid in your body.  Prilosec OTCÔ normally takes two to three days to start working and should be taken on an empty stomach for optimal absorption.  Prilosec OTCÔ is a significantly cheaper alternative to similar prescription drugs in its class.

Acid reflux is a medical condition that should be properly diagnosed by a physician.  Please discuss your situation with your physician before initiating or switching from your current therapy.  Stop in and ask your Webb’s Family Pharmacist about Prilosec OTCÔ today!
