RISK FACTORS FOR CORONARY HEART DISEASE 

Positive Risk Factors

q          Male > 45 years old.

q          Female > 55 years old OR < 55 years old with both ovaries removed who is not taking estrogen replacement therapy.

q          Family history of premature coronary heart disease (one of the following)

·         Definite myocardial infarction in a male parent or sibling before age 55 OR a female parent or sibling before age 65.

·         Sudden death in a male parent or sibling before age 55 OR in a female parent or sibling before age 65.

q          Current cigarette smoking.

q          Blood pressure > 140/90 mm Hg or taking antihypertensive therapy.

q          HDL cholesterol < 35mg/dl.

q          Diabetes mellitus.

  

Negative Risks Factors

q          60mg/ HDL cholesterol > dl.

 

Each positive risk factor equals +1 and each negative risk factor equals –1.  The number of risk factors should be determined at the initial visit and tabulated to arrive at the total number.  The number of risk factors is used in determining whether treatment is required for a particular level of lipids.  The risk factor analysis can be updated periodically when factors change.
